Gardening has been a passion of mine since I was 15, although I suspect my love for the natural world around me began before I can remember and the outdoors is where I have always felt most comfortable.
When my mother purchased the home I finished growing up in, here in Gloucester MA I was 12 and that was when my real love affair with gardening began. The first landscape and garden that I really got to take some ownership of and delight in the satisfaction of seeing seeds germinate into tasty treats, beautiful blossoms and grow into a garden of treasures we delighted in year after year. Spring visits to local nurseries and garden centers were always the most exciting shopping trip. Lucky enough to have Goose Cove Gardens ,a real neighborhood nursery center that no longer exists, basically in our backyard the trips for one more plant, seed packet or container to fill were frequent until the signs of winter were upon us. Excelling in school and anxious to get to work I started an apprenticeship with Distinctive Garden Designs of Lanesville where I got a taste of what working in the garden and landscape industry was really like and I was intrigued and happy to find something I loved after a couple years trying out retail, the industry I grew up in. At the same time I was fortunate enough to be in a program through high school where I was dually enrolled in and primarily going to classes at our local community college pursuing my associates degree in Liberal Arts. Through this program and advisers I began to pursue my other interests in anatomy and physiology which lead me to spending a year in a physical therapy assistants program following completion of my Liberal Arts Associates degree.
While I still remain passionate about kinesiology, it was here that I realized how important it was to me that I have a career based on being outdoors. Based on being in tune with the seasons and keeping the intense joy and zest for life and work that I found in gardening alive in me. That is what I focused my sights on and I haven’t looked back. I switched my major to Horticulture and the rest feels like history.
The horticulture program I was lucky enough to be a part of through North Shore Community College was tremendous. It was two years of hands on experience under the guidance of and wonderful teaching skills of professors who all came from the landscaping industry. Having all run successful businesses before falling into there roles as professors. We studied agronomy under a professor who ran a successful turf management business. Arboriculture under a professor who until then had probably spent more time in trees than under them. Greenhouse operations and Houseplant studies complete with a greenhouse we ran spring sales out of. Landscape Design with a skilled mason and designer who taught us everything from how to draw a plan to scale, survey a property accurately, install elements in the proper order and then care for the plant materials. We toured golf courses, well maintained home gardens, and tended to plants, shrubs, and trees right on school property. All the while my personal life kept evolving as I started to acquire my first customers and begin my own garden maintenance business.
By the time I graduated with my Associates in Science focused in Horticulture I was eight months pregnant with my first daughter and busy planning her father and I’s wedding-one of the most exciting times of my life complete with six dogs and about thirty houseplants. Never one to shy away from my work because I genuinely love the process, I worked right up until my due date and was proud to have her as my first assistant as I designed and implemented my first garden plans. Laying a stone patio and walkways around a small woodland style garden. From there I continued to grow my customer list and my skillset while also getting some of the best training possible working for Lanesville based Cottage Gardening, an undeniable asset to my career.
As the lucky mother of three daughters , all of whom have reached elementary school, now I am currently missing having them alongside me as I work. My customers had all grown use to them being my assistants, helping find all the worms, dig the holes and of course go for wheel barrel rides.
Now I have wonderful women working alongside me whom come with real hands on experience working in gardens and love any day a kiddo or three gets to tag along and be a part of the team. They are key to making the magic happen and keeping me smiling along the way. Together we hope to entice you to enjoy your outdoor living spaces as much as we do.
When I am not gardening or caring for my myriad of houseplant’s I enjoy spending time with my husband Stephen, a local fisherman who can be caught on site occasionally with a shovel or rake in hand and our fun-loving daughters Emma (10), Madeline (8), and Casey (5) and beloved Labrador retrievers Gus(13) and Mocha(1) . If not hauling lobster traps with my hubby or soaking up the splendor of this amazing corner of the world we live in it is a sincere joy to escape to our home away from home on a lake in beautiful New Hampshire.
